Platon Alexiades
Dear Franco, I agree with you that the signals deciphered by Porta had little value to Iachino and cannot be compared to the Ultra signals. Although uboatarchive.net has some signals from Ultra sources, I would like to point out that these are only a fraction of the Ultra signals. I would recommend to those interested in a more detailed view of these signals to check the DEFE3 series at TNA (Kew): http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_srt=3&_st=adv&_cr1=DEFE3&_dss=range&_ro=any&search=r The DEFE3 series has 1022 items for a total of about 800,000 pages (nearly the same number of signals, a few of them have two pages so it is hard to calculate the actual number of signals). Interested readers can download them from this site (it is free). These are only naval signals in the Western Theatre, other Ultra signals can be found in other series. For example, I found the German Abwehr (German Secret Service) signals deciphered by Ultra to be very useful for my Corinth Canal book.(they are found in the HW19 series but unfortunately cannot be downloaded). I believe that some Ultra signals are still missing, perhaps lost during the war or perhaps still held up by GCHQ. For example I have some evidence that some Ultra signals relating to the Aprilia convoy (on which you wrote a very interesting and detailed article in Bollettino d'Archivio Giugno 2007) were lost Perhaps they were lost during the bombardment of Malta, other signals may have been lost during the evacuation of Alexandria in June 1942. Cordiali saluti, Platon
