Francesco De Domenico
Platon Alexiades
Dear Francesco, I am trying to post this answer to your remark but my message cannot be saved for some unknown reason. Regarding your remark on the 12-pounder = 3 inch (76mm) gun. This is quite possible, most of the documents including technical drawings of HMS Urge just refer to them as "12-pdr" without giving them a bore. I saw only one single document mentioning it was 57mm so this was most probably an error, in this case my apologies! The weight of the shell does make it heavy for 57mm guns. The length of the gun on HMS Urge appears rather small (about 2 metres). Many thanks for your comments. Platon Apro questo thread per la difficoltà di postare ancora sul precedente. Platon Alexiades
Dear Giuseppe, Many thanks for posting these items. I was unable to do so. Readers of this forum who wish to see a short video clip of the wreck (about 3 minutes or 500 MB) can contact me by email to get a Dropbox link (I need your email address to make it available). Platon Alexiades
After an exchange with a friend of Misson on uboat.net, I have now understood why he suddenly switched from "absolute certainty" that the wreck was HMS Odin to a new theory that the wreck was HMS Upholder. I had not realised that he mistook the mooring eye for an external torpedo tube and he thought he was watching the bow section of the submarine when the mooring eye is actually aft. I regret to disappoint some but the wreck is certainly not that of HMS Upholder, although it could also have been very exciting. If interest in the video (kindly posted by Danilo Pellegrini, many thanks!) and other photos has now faded, I will removed them from my Dropbox to save space. Thank you, Platon
Platon Alexiades
I understand from various contacts that Misson is now claiming that the submarine we found is HMS P36 which was raised after the war and scuttled off Malta. This is another error from his part as the wreck of HMS P36 is well known in Malta and is located about 8 nautical miles to the northwest of HMS Urge. I expect he will go through the whole list of "U" class submarines pretty soon. Thank you, Platon
Platon Alexiades
Attached is a sonar picture of HMS P36 (courtesy of Timmy Gambin). As one can seen it is lying on its side and is a different wreck from HMS Urge. Also the gun has been removed as can be seen in photographs at the Imperial War Museum.
