Platon Alexiades
During the Second World war, the first attack by an Italian submarine was made by Smeraldo (T.V. Carlo Todaro) at 0100/11 June 1940. The attack occurred at about 60 miles west of Alexandria, the target about 7-8,000 tons (one of two ships). Was it ever identified? The attack was unobserved but anyone has a clue of a merchant ship in this area at that time? Apparently she must have left Alexandria a few hours before. British documents for this period are very sketchy. Many thanks. Platon
Francesco Mattesini
Platon. Potresti vedere se risulta qualcosa sull'attacco dello SMERALDO nel Diario della Mediterranean Fleet o del Comandante di Alessandria. Francesco
Platon Alexiades
Francesco, Nothing on that in the Cunningham's diaries and I have been unable to locate the war diaries of the Naval Officer in Charge Alexandria, it seems to have been lost. Also at the start of the war, the war diaries were not as well detailed as they were later on. AFRICAN PRINCE arrived at Alexandria from Istanbul and PASS OF BALMAHA from Gibraltar on 12.06.1940 but they do not appear to have been attacked.
