Platon Alexiades
I am checking the history of the submarine HMS Ultor and would like to know if anyone has precise information on the number of casualties and survivors when Valfiorita was sunk on 08.07.1943. According to the Ardimentoso's report there were 128 survivors picked up yet the Supermarina war diaries mention 115 survivors picked up by Ardimentoso and another five or six who reached the coast in a lifeboat. Anyone can supply a more accurate answer? Any information on casualties? Lorenzo Colombo's website (conlapelleappesaaunchiodo) mentions 13 killed or missing. Many thanks. Francesco De Domenico
Dear Platon, I think that Lorenzo Colombo's site, which lists the names and positions of 12 crewmen missing plus the chief engineer who died of his wounds, and has a very detailed history of the ship and the sinking event, must be considered reliable. Platon Alexiades
Dear Francesco, Thank you for your answer. I have already contacted Lorenzo who relied on a very detailed article but apparently it was focused on the crew of Valfiorita and made no mention of the passengers. He cited 57 survivors from the crew but the total number of survivors is recorded as 120-128 according to sources as mentioned in #1 so there may have been casualties among the passengers as well. All the best, Platon
