Doveva imbarcare bombardieri strategici tipo AJ Savage, se non ricordo male, e quindi la USN si poneva in diretta competizione con i B 36 dell'USAF. Dopo una sola settimana, la lobby USAF ebbe la meglio, il materiale posto sullo scalo venne smantellato, e il Segretario della Navy James V. Forrestal si tolse la vita. Danilo Pellegrini Posted December 29, 2016 Report Share Posted December 29, 2016 Da leggersi in merito l'esauriente saggio dell'ammiraglio Michele Cosentino, pubblicato da Storia Militare n°263, agosto 2015, sulla grave crisi che, nel 1948-49, incrinò i rapporti dell'US Navy con l'USAF e con i vertici politici statunitensi in seguito alla cancellazione della superportaerei United States.Uno degli episodi meno conosciuti nella storia dell' Us Navy del secondo dopoguerra riguarda la clamorosa manifestazione di protesta condotta nel 1949 da un gruppo di ammiragli e di ufficiali superiori in servizio nei confronti dei leaders politici dell'epoca. La protesta, ufficialmente ricordata come la “Rivolta degli Ammiragli” o anche la “Battaglia del Potomac” (il fiume che attraversa Washington), scaturì da una serie di decisioni maturate a valle dell'unificazione politico-amministrativa delle forze militari statunitensi del 1947. La portaerei United States appena impostata, il 18 aprile 1949. La costruzione dell'unità venne annullata soltanto quattro giorni dopo, il 23 aprile.
