8.9.1943: last submarine attack on Italian shipping

At 1329 hours on 8 September 1943, the submarine HMS Unrivalled attacked with torpedoes a small armed merchant ship leaving Bari for a northward destination, The torpedoes missed and the target opened fire on the submarine before returning to Bari, This was the last Allied submarine attack on Italian shipping before the Armistice came into effect.

Can anyone identify this vessel?

Many thanks,

Dear Domenico,

Many thanks for your information which is very useful. We can eliminate APUANIA as she was too large. HMS UNRIVALLED estimated the target as 800-1000 tons so logically RINUCCI or LUANA are a better choice as they are about 1200 GRT. However, I would observe from experience that when a submarine commander evaluates a target as 800-1000 tons, she is more like 500 tons!

But off course there are exceptions. Another element of doubt is that the target was described as "well armed" (a reason why the submarine did not try to sink her by gunfire). To my knowledge RINUCCI or LUANA were not armed. Perhaps the target was an auxiliary?

All the best,

Dear Domenico,

Thanks for the precision concerning APUANIA. So she may have been after all the target if she sailed earlier than announced as I am not surprised if a submarine commander mistakes a 275 GRT vessel for an 800 GRT one. But as you say  it may also have been one of Vigilanza Foranea.

All the best,
