Platon Alexiades
Can anyone supply information on this auxiliary minesweeper? Characteristics, career, fate? She operated in the Corfu area in 1942. I think she was built in 1914 and had a tonnage of 219 GRT but I am not absolutely sure. Many thanks. Corto Maltese
Hi Platon at the moment I have found only this information: Source: La difesa del traffico con l'Albania, la Grecia e l'Egeo, USMM, Roma 1965.
Francesco De Domenico
Well, Platon, in a book by Giorgio Spazzapan and Paolo Valenti there is a detailed history of MONFALCONE including photos. If you can bear with me a couple of days I shall post them.Francesco P.S. I trust that the first mentioned author has no objection.... Platon Alexiades
Dear Francesco, Many thanks for a very quick response and look forward to the pages from book by Giorgio Spazzapan and Paolo Valenti. If the book is still available, perhaps I could order it?Thank you also for the pages from the La difesa del traffico con l'Albania, la Grecia e l'Egeo (which I have). Regarding the sinking of Rosandra on 14/15 June 1943: the Official History omits the presence of Giampaolo (auxiliary minesweeper?) and the tug Porto Conte which were also sent to assist. The name of the fishing vessel R.85 is (I believe) the Reccaro. My query is actually related to the history of the submarine HMS Proteus which I am checking for Uboat.net. Proteus attacked with torpedoes Monfalcone on 27 March 1942, she missed. All the best, Platon
Platon Alexiades
Dear Corto, Apologies for my mistake in the previous posting for not thanking you directly for the pages from the La difesa del traffico con l'Albania, la Grecia e l'Egeo. Many thanks for the quick response and your help! All the best, Platon

Francesco De Domenico
Dear Platon, Loligo beat me to the history of the ship : that is an excerpt from his world famous database... The book is Giorgio Spazzapan, Paolo Valenti "I vaporetti. Storia dei servizi costieri per passeggeri nel golfo di Trieste", Edizioni Luglio, dicembre 2003. I could post the photos tomorrow, if Nereo does not beat me again. According to Ghiglino's List MONFALCONE was requisitioned as G 48 on 1 June 1940. The auxiliary minesweeper R 85 was the motopeschereccio RECOARO (not RECCARO) of 50 grt.
Francesco De Domenico
GIAMPAOLO could well have been the offshore minesweeper/escort vessel F 97 GIANPAOLO I, a passenger steamer of 199 grt requisitioned from 1940 to 1947: another entry from the Spazzapan/Valenti book. Delivered as the German naval minesweeper FM 25 in August 1918 at Lehe by the Weser Schiffbauges., stricken 29.4.1922, sold to Berlin owners, rebuilt in 1925 as the passenger vessel BISMARCK for Paul Mestermann from Rostock. Sold in 1927 as ALANDS-EXPRESS to the Alands Angbats OY of Abo, Finnish flag, in 1930 EXPRESS for the Abolands Angfartygs [Loligo please forgive my incorrect Swedish/Finnish spelling]. In July 1933 purchased by Natale Giuffré from Sorrento as S. COSTANZO EXPRESS for the Golfo di Napoli service, and in May 1935 becomes GIANPAOLO I for the Navigazione Municipalizzata di Muggia (Trieste). 199 grt, 121 nrt, 2 triple expansion engines, 575 hp, 11 knots Requisitioned in 1940 as F 97, joined the Forza Navale Speciale and on 27.5.1941 took part in the Rhodes to Sitia Eastern Crete landing convoy, later used for landing exercises. Derequisitioned at Muggia in 1947, sold to the Soc. Triestina Imprese Marittime, broken up in 1952 at Trieste by SIDEMAR. A photo tomorrow. Francesco De Domenico
And PORTO CONTE was obviously the naval tug of 220-230 t displacement, built by Cantiere Breda at Venezia-Marghera, launched 30.12.1935 and completed 14.11.1936 for the Regia Marina, survived the war and was delivered to Yugoslavia under the terms of the Peace Treaty at Split on 23.4.1949. Renamed PR 51, still extant in Jane's 1977-78.
