Nel maggio 1940 ha difeso con successo con i suoi tre pezzi da 150 mm la diga Afsluitdijk sulle coste della Frisia contro l'avanzata tedesca, ma il giorno dopo (14 maggio) affondata da aerei tedeschi fuori Callantsoog mentre cercava di rifugiarsi in Gran Bretagna. P.S. La Mauritshuis [la "casa di Maurizio"] all'Aja ospita tra gli altri la famosa "Veduta di Delft" del buon Vermeer (a detta di Marcel Proust il più bel paesaggio mai dipinto).
