21/07/2017 "Dear Friends, It is with sadness that I inform you that I have decided to relinquish the editorship of Jane’s Fighting Ships after 17 years at the helm. My contract expires on 31 August 2017. While I was tempted to continue for a few more years, I think that the time is now right – I would certainly like to do a bit less! I wish I could tell you that a new editor had been appointed and that there would be an orderly transition from me to the next editor. Unfortunately, despite having been given ample warning, Jane’s is as yet unclear about how it wishes to handle JFS in the future. I suspect that the work will be taken ‘in house’, as has been the case with other titles, and so I am unable at the moment to advise the appropriate point(s) of contact if you wish to continue to contribute as in the past. I suspect also that our informal arrangements of the past will cease and that a contract may be required to cover such matters as copyright. The reason for this is that Jane’s has been subject to a number of copyright claims and wishes to protect itself in the future. I cannot thank you all enough for your strong support over the years. You have all been enormously helpful by supplying photographs and information which have been the lifeblood of JFS. Quite simply, I could not have done my job without you; JFS is as much your work as mine. I have also much valued your personal friendship and encouragement. I only hope that I have managed to convince Jane’s of the vital role that your contributions have played and that it will be possible for you to continue your work under the new regime. I am sure that it should be possible to establish a new ‘modus operandi’. I will of course update you with developments as they emerge over the next few weeks! Meanwhile, I am very happy to continue to receive information updates. However, given the short time that I have left, I think it would be best not to send any more photographs unless they are of special significance. Best regards, Stephen" 25/08/2017 "Dear Friends, As you all know, my term as editor of Jane’s Fighting Ships ends next week on 31st August 2017. As I understand it, there is not to be a single editor and updates are to be handled by a group of people. If you wish to contribute in the future, please use this email address: JanesFightingShips@ihsmarkit.com Alternatively, please use this postal address: Jane’s Fighting Ships IHS Markit Sentinel House 163 Brighton Road Coulsdon Surrey CR5 2YH United Kingdom As many of you know, I have in the past restricted the use of your photographs to Jane’s Fighting Ships and have sought your permission for images to be used in other Jane’s publications on a case by case basis. Your photographs of course remain your copyright. As I do not know how the future system will work, I recommend that you clarify the terms of use of your images so that there is no misunderstanding. Thank you all very much for your help over the last 17 years. I could not have done it without you! Best wishes for the future, Stephen "
