Un post che piacerà ai navalisti ed ai mercantilisti: due mercantili italiani assistiti dalla LIBECCIO nel Golfo di Aden:

-- A press report, dated Jun 23, states: Operation Atalanta warship, ITS Libeccio, responded to a distress call from bulk carrierRoberto Rizzo (91971 gt, built 2009), after it became adrift 55 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia on Jun 18. The merchant vessel had been en route from Greece to China, when it issued a distress call, after developing serious engine problems. According to EURNAVFOR, its close proximity to the coast made it vulnerable to potential pirate attack. Therefore the bulker asked for military assistance in order to increase its security. The EU Naval warship ITS Libeccio, that was patrolling the Gulf of Aden to ensure the protection to the vulnerable shipping, headed to the area in order to give assistance to the Italian merchant vessel. The Libeccio's helicopter Augusta-Bell 212 (Call sign thunder 66) took off from the Italian frigate to provide the necessary safety to the vulnerable ship whilst fixing the engine failure.

- A press report  dated Jul 25 -- Whilst conducting counter-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden, EU Naval Force flagship ESPS Galicia responded to a mayday call from Roll on roll off with container capacity Altinia (8707 gt, built 1992) on Jul 15. The vessel had developed engine problems and was drifting in the Gulf of Aden, in approximate position lat 12.37N, long 45 04E. ESPS Galicia sailed close to Altinia to provide protection from any potential pirate attack, whilst spare engine parts were acquired from a Combined Task Force 151 warship that was in the vicinity. Due to other operational, counter-piracy tasking, ESPS Galicia handed over the protection of Altinia to EU Naval Force warship, ITS Libeccio. As it was assessed that Altinia would require specialised, technical assistance in port, ITS Libeccio towed the vessel to the port of Djibouti so that a further inspection and repairs could be carried out.
