Torpediniera Lince, 2 ottobre 1940

Buongiorno, un altro piccolo enigma, sempre dal vecchio "Le torpediniere italiane" (pag. 307).

Stavolta si tratta della torpediniera Lince, per la quale il testo suddetto rivendica "l'affondamento di un piroscafo avversario danneggiato e abbandonato dall'equipaggio (Egeo, 2 ottobre 1940)".

Non sono riuscito a trovare nessun riferimento a questa unità, nè ad azioni di forze di superficie o subacquee italiane che potrebbero avere danneggiato un mercantile, in date sufficientemente vicine a quella indicata, nell'area del Mar Egeo (indicazione peraltro piuttosto vaga, data l'estensione dello stesso): in "L'aeronautica italiana nella seconda guerra mondiale" del Gen. Santoro (2^ Ed. 1957), nell'elenco delle azioni aeree minori, trovo al 1 ottobre 1940 l'attacco di 5 S79 del 39. Stormo a due unità identificate come incrociatori leggeri o cacciatorpediniere a S di Cerigo, con esito del tiro negativo (vol. 1, pag. 550).

Altri eventi collegati genericamente all'area e alla stessa finestra temporale sono relativi al 1 ottobre, con l'affondamento del sommergibile Berillo da parte dei caccia HMS Havock e Hasty a S di Creta e al 2 ottobre, quando gli incrociatori inglesi HMS Orion e Sydney bombardano Maltezana, nell'isola di Stampalia (si veda https://www.naval-history.net/xDKWW2-4010-23OCT01.htm, consultato per rapidità).

Hello Fabrizio,

The Lince file shows she was at Portolago from 21 September to 5 October 1940 so she could not have been involved in any action as mentioned in the book. The Supermarina diaries as well as the diaries of Comando Zona Militare Marittima Dell Egeo do not mention any action of this type either.

From the British side, the actions you mentioned (bombardment of Stampalia and sinking of Berillo) are the only ones of note.

I do not know the source of the error but mistakes happen in the best of books.

thanks for your quick answer.

Probably it was a mistake, as you wrote: I wonder where it comes from. The bulletin of Comando Supremo of Oct, 3rd, 1940 does not mention any action of the type: on the other hand, no bulletin of October, 1940 mentions anything relevant to this claimed action.

I think it will remain a little mystery.
