Some sources indicate that the wreck of the submarine HMS Regent was found by divers off Barletta. Is this true? I have never seen photographs of this wreck.

Many thanks.

Dear Giuseppe,

Many thanks for the quick answer. I am curious to see how the submarine was identified as I have not seen concrete evidence with other photos? I understand that the depth is not very deep (35 metres) and I would have expected more photos.

All the best,

Platon

Dear Giuseppe,

I have seen this link where Stefano Di Cagna seems to believe that the wreck which is small (40 metres) is actually that of an Italian submarine used as an oil depot.

http://www.divesited...hms_regent.html

Which Italian submarine could this be? As far as I know Domenico Millelire, Giovanni Bausan and Balilla were transformed in oil depot vessel but I was not aware that any of these were lost off Barletta. Also they were large boats and the length of 40 metres does not match.

All the best,

Platon

Dear Platon,

On Bollettino AIDMEN No.30 of 2016, page 336, there are photos of Galleggianti Tipo Sportiello used as Harbour floating fuel depots in WW2.

The photos of Bollettino no. 29/2015  actually represent GRG 523 ex large submarine  R 12 TITO TAZIO as a hulk  at Ancona in 1962, except for the last photo of page 246 which depicts GR or GRG 253, a galleggiante by Enrico Sportiello built in 1943, seen at La Spezia in October 1969. A further photo of GR 253, a towable floating fuel depot,  at La Spezia in July 1953  is on the book "Aldo Fraccaroli fotografo navale" by Erminio Bagnasco, Ermanno Albertelli Editore, 1996, page 97. I shall post it as soon as possible.

Dear Giuseppe and Francesco,

Many thanks for the additional information but then what is the identity of the wreck found off Barletta?

It seems that around December 10th there will be an inspection of the wreck: probably she is not the HMS Regent maybe it's a WWI submarine "used [...] for a minefield 8 miles outside the town of Barletta".

Dear "Corto Maltese",

It will be interesting to learn what the 10th December examination will provide. Many thanks for the info!
